London has been at the forefront of the development of community based crime and disorder reduction. Over more than 30 years it has led the way in partnership working between statutory and voluntary sector bodies and the communities that they serve (see Timeline).

Each of the 33 London municipalities (including the City of London) provides community safety services.

Municipality based Community Safety Partnerships (CSPs) jointly undertake work developed to tackle differing crime and disorder reduction priorities as well as overarching London priorities.

Each borough has core activities, which are developed by CSPs directed staff, plus Youth Offending Teams, Probation Services (supervising adult offenders and those released on license from prison) and Community Payback.

In addition to core crime and disorder work undertaken by borough based CSPs, there are voluntary organisations, within most boroughs, which provide community safety linked services (such as victim support services, community and police consultation groups).

MOPAC's responsibilities for London wide community safety mean that central co-ordination and cross borough working should have a greater part ot play in local crime and disorder reduction. (see below).

Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC)

MOPAC's relationship with London's Community Safety Partnerships is a developing one. Having been granted additional duties for police and crime commissioning, MOPAC is becoming formally engaged with the delivery community safety at a strategic level [both regionally and at local municipal (CSP) level].
